Activity Overview
Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and changes in bone architecture that produce bone fragility and increase fracture risk. Bone fracture and its consequences are the most important concerns for patients with osteoporosis, as fracture is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. It is evident that identification of patients who are at risk for osteoporosis and related fractures remains a challenge for clinicians. The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) recently updated its guidelines on osteoporosis in the Clinician's Guide to Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis, published in 2008. The updated guidelines present the current thinking on identification of patients who are at risk for osteoporosis, as well as on the practical management of patients who have or are at risk for osteoporosis. The purpose of this newsletter is to provide clinicians with recommendations for implementation of updated guidelines on the management of osteoporosis.
Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians and other health care professionals in endocrinology, rheumatology, obstetrics/ gynecology, and primary care who manage patients who have or are at risk for osteoporosis.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Implement osteoporosis prevention, screening, treatment, and monitoring recommendations based on NOF's updated 2008 Clinician's Guide to Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis
- Evaluate the risk for low bone density, osteoporosis, and osteoporosis-related fractures in their patients, including the assessment for secondary osteoporosis
- Effectively interpret central dual-x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) results to accurately diagnose patients with osteoporosis and low bone density
- Utilize the FRAX" tool appropriately to help determine if pharmacologic treatment is necessary in patients with low bone density
