Activity Overview
This activity follows the case of Selma, a 73-year-old woman who sustained a hip fracture. Alongside Selma, activity participants meet the health care professionals who manage her care. At each step in the case, participants hear perspectives from Selma and her team of clinicians. The activity describes the risks associated with hip fracture in an older patient, presents tools for evaluating and diagnosing osteoporosis, and discusses options for osteoporosis treatment and fracture prevention.
Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians and other health care professionals in endocrinology, rheumatology, obstetrics/gynecology, and primary care who manage patients who have or are at risk for osteoporosis.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Assess the effect of hip fracture on patient morbidity and mortality
- Design a plan for managing osteoporosis and monitoring bone density in a patient who has sustained a hip fracture
- Evaluate pharmacologic options for the treatment of osteoporosis
- Calculate calcium intake and correct deficiencies in recommended calcium requirements
