David W. Dempster completed a doctorate in physiology at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. His postdoctoral training included a research fellowship with Dr. J. A. Fischer at the University of Zurich in Switzerland and a visiting fellowship with Dr. P. J. Meunier at the University of Lyon in France.
A Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society, Dr. Dempster is a member of the American Society for Bone & Mineral Research, the Endocrine Society, and the International Society of Clinical Densitometry. In addition, Dr. Dempster is a member of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Advisory Group for U01 "HR-pQCT as a biomarker of bone strength in osteoporosis trials," the Scientific Advisory Council of the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and an elected member of the Association of Osteobiology. At Columbia University and the Helen Hayes Hospital, Dr. Dempster serves on a number of departmental and university committees.
Dr. Dempster has published extensively in the peer-reviewed literature. He serves as the Associate Editor of Osteoporosis International and is an editorial board member for several journals, including Bone and Journal of Clinical Densitometry. He has also authored numerous book chapters and co-edited two books: Estrogens and Anti-estrogens: Basic and Clinical Aspects (1997) and The Bone Quality Book (2006). Dr. Dempster has been active in the research of hyperparathyroidism, Paget's disease, and osteoporosis, and is the principal investigator on several funded studies. He is a frequent lecturer, and he served as moderator for several live-remote presentations.
