Kenneth G. Saag completed a medical degree at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. His postdoctoral training included residency and chief residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University, Evanston Hospital and a fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Dr. Saag also completed a master of science degree in epidemiology in the University of Iowa Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health. He has served as Director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Deep South Musculoskeletal Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics since its inception in 2000, and he is Associate Director of the UAB Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center.
Dr. Saag is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), and the ABIM Subspecialty Board of Rheumatology. He is a member of several professional organizations, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology, and currently the only rheumatologist on National Osteoporosis Foundation's Board of Trustees. Additionally, Dr. Saag is on the FDA Arthritis Advisory Committee. In 2006, he co-chaired the American Medical Association Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement on Osteoporosis. Previously, Dr. Saag chaired the Arthritis Foundation Clinical, Therapeutics and Outcomes Study Section. He also served on several National Institutes of Health study sections, Institute of Medicine committees, and national committees to develop guidelines for the management of arthritis and osteoporosis.
Dr. Saag has authored several book chapters and published numerous articles, abstracts, reviews, and editorials in the peer-reviewed literature. He is a member of the editorial board of Archives of Internal Medicine, Arthritis Care and Research, and Arthritis Research and Therapy. Dr. Saag is a highly sought lecturer and visiting professor, as well as an active investigator. Dr. Saag's current research focuses on the epidemiology of osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as methods to translate evidence into practice for both arthritis and osteoporosis.
